Guidance for Team Managers and Selectors

27/4/2010

Before engaging selectors, the Team Manager (TM) or Director of Representative Fencing (DRF) shall establish the selection zone. For most events a zone of twice the number of fencers required will be sufficient however for high cost or overseas events it may be wise to extend this number.

The TM or DRF will determine the availability of all fencers in the selection zone by contacting them directly using a standard template which asks the fencer to confirm that they are available if selected and offers them the opportunity to provide additional information in support of their selection.

The TM or DRF will pass the following information to the selectors:-

  • The list of available fencers (as above).
  • Any relevant disciplinary issues.
  • Any additional information provided by the fencers. In most cases, this should be passed on unedited and without comment.

Where the selection rules include mandatory places based on a ranking list, fencers who are known to be unavailable will not be considered and the right of selection passes to the next highest ranked fencer.

When considering discretionary places, the selectors shall take account of not only the relevant ranking but shall also give due consideration to all additional factors notified by the fencers and any other available information.

If the selectors have doubt about the ability or willingness of a fencer to participate fully in an event through injury, personal circumstances or other commitments then they can ask the TM or DRF to make further enquiries directly of the fencer and take this into account.
