No medals for GB on the final day of Cadet events

On the final day of the Cadet events another day of team events featured Women’s Epee, Women’s Foil and Men’s Sabre.

Cadet Women’s Epee Team

Sixteen teams took part in this event including one from Great Britain (McCarthy, Stanier, Turley and Lawson as reserve).  In the round of 16 GB faced number three seeds Germany and they lost 35-26.  In the placings matches GB beat Switzerland 45-36, Estonia 45-28 and Austria 45-41 to finish ninth.

Russia beat Italy 45-39 to take the European title.  The bronze medal went to France who beat Germany 45-36 in the third place play-off.

Cadet Women’s Foil Team

Great Britain (Campbell, Clarke, Feklistova and Dmochowska as reserve) was one of twelve teams competing in this event and they narrowly lost, 45-43 to Sweden in the round of 16.  They had a bye through their first placings match and then beat Israel 45-31 and Holland 45-43 to finish ninth.

Poland continued their impressive form at the Championships taking gold with a 45-32 win over Hungary.  Italy beat France 45-29 to take the bronze medal.

Cadet Men’s Sabre

A field of eleven teams included one from Great Britain (Deary, Maxwell, Woodburn and Edmundson as reserve).  A victory 45-38 over Turkey in the round of 16 was followed by a 45-33 loss to Italy in the following round.  In the placings matches Great Britain edged Ukraine 45-44 and then lost 45-43 to Poland to take sixth place.

In the final Italy took gold beating Russia 45-41 whilst France beat Germany 45-34 to take the bronze medal.

Speaking after the events, Chef de Mission, Joanna Cook said; “After disappointing first matches, the teams really picked themselves up to have some strong performances and work well as a team.  This concludes a successful cadet European Champs with some great performances by the athletes.”
