JUNIOR EUROPEAN CHAMPS REPORT DAY 6

2nd March 2014

Gold Medals for Russia and Czech Republic

With the Cadet events over, day six of the Championships was the start of the Junior events.  The European title was up for grabs in the individual Men’s Foil and Women’s sabre categories.

Junior Men’s Foil

In a field of sixty-nine just Kristjan Archer and James Brosnan were there to represent Great Britain.  It was a tough start for both fencers as Brosnan only managed three victories from six fights and Archer only four from six.  Both fencers made the cut but Brosnan lost 15-13 to Artur Tsevan (BLR) in the round of 64.  Archer found some form and took Tayga Yuvacan (TUR) apart 15-5 to make the round of 32.  Sadly, he did not make it any further as Tommaso Cuiti (ITA) knocked him out 15-10.  Cuiti went on to make the quarterfinals.

Alexander Choupenitch (CZE) towered over Baptiste Mourrain (FRA) in the final and took the title in impressive style, 15-8, with a spectacularly sharp direct attack to take the gold medal.  The bronze medals went to Krystian Gryglewski (POL) and Andras Nemeth (HUN).

GB placing:  Archer 22nd & Brosnan 44th.

Junior Women’s Sabre

Two more British fencers formed part of the 42-strong field in this event.  Only one made it through the first round cut with Katie Daykin only winning one fight from six. Aliya Itzkowitz (V2D4) did make it through and then took out the number five seed, Oleksandra Mamontova (UKR) 15-11 in the round of 32.  Unfortunately, Itzkowitz then lost 15-11 to Petra Zahonyi (HUN), the Cadet Champion and eventual quarter-finalist, in the round of 16.

Senior World number 22, Anna Marton (HUN) took on Tatiana Sukhova (RUS) in the gold medal match and it was no surprise that the Hungarian led 8-5 at the break.  The Russian made a fight of it in the second period but Marton went on to take the title 15-10.  The bronze medals went to two Italian fencers, Flaminia Prearo and Sofia Ciaraglia.

GB placings:  Itzkowitz 15th and Daykin 36th.
