JUNIOR EUROPEAN CHAMPS REPORT DAY 9

4th March 2014

Fourth place for Great Britain as Junior team events start

The final stages of the Cadet & Junior European Championships started today with team events in Junior Men’s Epee, Men’s Foil and Women’s Sabre.

Junior Men’s Epee Team

Eighteen teams took part in this event including one from Great Britain (Beaumont, Curran-Jones, Sanchez Lethem and Marsh).  With a ranking of six for the event GBR had a bye through the round of 32 that meant a meeting with Estonia was their first action of the day in the round of 16.  Never an easy match, the British team just edged their opponents 45-39.  Home favourites and third seeds, Israel were next – a team which included the individual champion, Yuval Freilich.  Great Britain was on a roll though and they made it through to the semi-finals 45-37.  Their chance of fighting for gold ended at the hands of Ukraine, 45-40, despite a valiant fight from all members of the team.  Fighting for bronze against Spain was the consolation but the Spaniards took the medal 45-37.  Hungary, the number one seeds, eased to victory over Ukraine 45-36.

Junior Men’s Foil Team

The thirteen teams battling it out in this event did not include one from Great Britain.  It was no surprise to anyone following this tournament that Poland had the in form team.  Their ranking (5) meant they drew Italy in semi-finals a beat them relatively comfortably, 45-40.  They went on to clinch the title, beating Hungary 45-41 in the gold medal match.  Russia overcame a clearly upset Italian team, 45-26 in the bronze medal match.
