INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT REPORT 20 MAY 2014

20th May 2014

There were just two events on the main senior international circuit this weekend.

Women’s Epee World Cup – Rio de Janeiro

There were 117 competitors in Rio, Brazil at the weekend including Great Britain’s Corinna Lawrence.

Four victories from six first round fights earned her a bye through the first of a two-stage preliminary elimination.  She made the second day by beating Costa (BRA) 15-9, in the second preliminary fight.  In the round of 64 Lawrence faced Hyein Lee (KOR) and edged a close match 15-14.  Swedish fencer, Sanne Gars knocked Lawrence out in the round of 32, beating her 15-11.

In the team event France beat China 44-43, to take the gold medal whilst Italy beat the USA 45-34 for the bronze medal.

GB placing:  Lawrence 31st.

Men’s Sabre Grand Prix – Warsaw

A field of 135 fencers took part in this event including four from Great Britain.  Alex Crutchett (V1D5) and Curtis Miller (V0D6) did not make the first round cut but Soji Aiyunero (V4D2) and James Honeybone (V5D1) did.  With both receiving byes through the first preliminary elimination fight, one more victory would have been enough to make the round of 64.  It was not to be, as Kindler (GER) defeated Aiyenuro 15-13 and Shachanin (BLR) knocked Honeybone out 15-9.

Aldo Montano (ITA) won the gold medal beating Max Hartung (GER) 15-5 in the final.  Luigi Samele (ITA) and Alexey Yakimenko (RUS) took the bronze medals.

GB Placing:  Honeybone 66th, Aiyenuro 76th, Crutchett 126th & Miller 128th.
