Two under-23 events close out the international action in 2015

Under-23 Women’s Epee - Heidelberg

All five British fencers entered into this event progressed through two poule stages and into the incomplete round of 128.  Sadie Greetham and Jessica Gundry had byes into the round of 64 and were joined their by Eleanor Cormack who beat Meszaros (GER) 15-11 and Alix Turley who beat teammate Lydia Stanier 15-14.  Repechage was employed in the round of 64 and Gundry progressed straight through to the second day with victories over Klingelberger (GER) 15-7 and Suhrbier (GER) 15-13.  She was joined by Turley who despite losing 15-3 to Sozanska (GER), went on to beat Mantai (GER) 15-10 and Derr (GER) 15-13.  Eleanor Cormack lost 15-7 to Werner (GER), beat Jonas (GER) 15-8 but the lost 15-10 to Suhrbier (GER) so went out.  Greetham lost 15-9 to Bekefi (GER) and 15-12 to Loehr (GER) to go straight out.

The slate was wiped clean for the round of 32 which also employed repechage.  Gundry beat. Leohr (GER) 15-11 but then lost 15-5 to Schmidl (AUT) and 15-12 to Tulen (NED).  Turley lost two in a row to Duplitzer (GER) 15-6 and Tulen (NED) 15-4.

Alexandra Ndolo (GER) beat Monica Sozanska (GER) 15-8 in the gold medal match and two other Germans, Imke Duplitzer and Ricarda Multerer picked up the bronze medals.

GB placings:  Gundry 19th, Turley 32nd, Cormack 48th, Greetham 55th & Stanier 66th.

Under-23 Men’s Foil - Gdansk

Glen Ostacchini was Great Britain’s sole representative amongst a field of seventy in Poland.  He won three of his six first round fights and progressed to the round of 64.  He narrowly missed out on the next round losing 15-14 to E. Khamzin (RUS), finishing in forty-sixth place.

Leszek Rajski (POL) won the event beating Mateusz Ulanowski (POL).  The bronze medals went to Askar Khamzin (RUS) and Andrzej Rzankowski (POL).
