PHILBIN AND HUGGINS DOUBLE

5th January 2016

Four from Great Britain selected as Paralympic Officials in Rio

British Fencing is pleased to announce that IWAS, the governing body for International Wheelchair Fencing, has confirmed Hilary Philbin, Peter Huggins, Chris Farren and Duncan Rowlands as members of the 41-strong technical delegation who will run the wheelchair fencing events at this year’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Philbin is one of two Technical Delegates representing International Wheelchair Fencing (IWF), liaising with the Rio organising team during two years of preparation and planning as well as during the Games itself.  This will follow Philbin’s role as DT member and Chief of Protocol at the Olympic Games the previous month.

Huggins, who was recently appointed Head of IWF’s SEMI Commission, will take up his role as SEMI Commission delegate with responsibility for the functionality and safety of all equipment used in the Paralympic fencing venue.  This is a Huggins double, as the same role is being undertaken by Janet Huggins during the Olympic Games.

Farren and Rowlands will both be flying the flag as referees, a role which they both undertook in London 2012.

Speaking about her role the President of British Fencing, Hilary Philbin, said; “I’m delighted to have been selected as a Technical Delegate.  Wheelchair fencing continues to make huge progress in so many ways, and the Paralympic Games gives us the best possible opportunity to showcase the developments in our sport.”

British Fencing extends its congratulations to all four for their selection and wishes them well at the Games.
