DAVIS MAKES TOP 8 IN LA CORUNA

23rd February 2013

Davis finishes seventh at World Cup as two other Brits make the top 32

James Davis was the star of the show at this weekend’s senior international fencing events.  He won all but one of his first round fights earning a bye through to the round of 64 and a seeding of 28.  There he faced Yunes (UKR) and just made it through 15-14.  In the round of 32 he faced world number 8 Aspromonte (ITA).  The Italian would have gone into the fight with the memory of his substitution against the British team in the men’s team foil event at the Olympic Games in London still fresh in his mind.  Davis took advantage and knocked his opponent out impressively 15-7.  He then beat another Italian – Nista – 15-9 to make the round of 8.  In the quarterfinal Davis took on Meinhardt (USA).  It was a tight fight that went to time at 10 a piece.  The American had the priority and squeezed past Davis 11-10.  Davis was placed seventh.

Marcus Mepstead and Richard Kruse also made the round of 32.  Mepstead was knocked out 15-7 by world number 1, Cassara (ITA) and Kruse fell 15-11 to Nista (ITA).  Kruse finished 22nd and Mepstead finished 27th.

The event was won by Akhmatkhuzin (RUS) who beat Heo (KOR) 15-7 to take the gold medal.  Compatriot Massialas joined Meinhardt on the bronze medal rostrum.
