Barcelona Women’s Epee World Cup, Tauberbischofsheim  Women’s Foil World Cup & Budapest Men’s Sabre Grand Prix

Russians medal haul on the international circuit

The senior international season continued at the weekend with three events taking place across Europe.

Women’s Epee World Cup – Barecelona

Corinna Lawrence was the only British fencer to join a massive field of 198 in Barcelona.  The day started well for her as she won five of her six first round matches.  In the first preliminary knockout she faced Swatowska (POL) and narrowly lost 15-14.  The event was won by Sivkova (RUS) who beat Duplitzer (GER) 15-8 in the gold medal match.  Branza (ROU) and Rembi (FRA) took the bronze medals.

Great Britain did not enter the team event that was won by China who beat Russia 45-36.  Ukraine defeated Italy 45-36 to take the bronze medal.

GB Individual Placings:  Lawrence 102nd.

Women’s Foil World Cup – Tauberbischofsheim

Four British women’s foilists headed to the biggest fencing centre in the world, Tauberbischofsheim, to join a field of 132 at the fourth ranking event of the season.  Troiano (V4D2) & Sheppard (V3D3) earned themselves byes to the second preliminary knockout but Cook (V1D5) and Sibert (V1D5) did not make the first round cut.  In the second preliminary fights Troiano beat Comerford (CAN) 15-8 and Sheppard knocked out Massialas (USA) 14-8 to make the round of 64.  There Sheppard lost 15-12 to Guyart (FRA) but Troiano beat Nishioka (JPN) 15-9.  She then lost 15-9 to Mohamed (HUN) in the round of 32.  Mohamed then went on to take a bronze medal along with Errigo (ITA).  The gold medal was won by Deriglazova (RUS) who beat Di Francisca (ITA) 15-14 in the final.

In the team event Great Britain lost 30-18 to Germany and then went on to beat Brazil 45-27, lose to Hungary 39-20 and Canada 44-29 to finish 12th.  Italy took the gold medal beating Russia 45-32 with France beating the USA 45-23 to take the bronze.

GB Individual Placings:  Troiano 30th, Sheppard 62nd, Sibert 116th & Cook 122nd.

Men’s Sabre Grand Prix – Budapest

A field of 122 in Budapest included six British fencers.  Honeybone earned himself a bye to the round of 64 by winning five of his six first round matches.  Alex Crutchett (V3D3), Anthony Crutchett (V3D3) and Ratneswaren (V2D4) made the preliminary knockout stage but Clarke (V2D4) and Mottershead (V1D5) did not make the first round cut.  In the preliminary knockout stage Alex Crutchett lost 15-13 to Balok (RUS), Anthony Crutchett was eliminated 15-6 by Desci (HUN) and Ratneswaren lost 15-8 to Szabo (GER).  British interest ended in the round of 64 with Honeybone falling 15-12 to Curatoli (ITA).  The event was won by Limbach (GER) who beat Kim (KOR) 15-14 in the final.  Szilagy (HUN) and Casares (ESP) took the bronze medals.

GB Individual Placings:  Honeybone 44th, Alex Crutchett 72nd, Anthony Crutchett 76th, Ratneswaren 88th, Clarke 93rd & Motterhead 103rd.

The senior international season continues this weekend with a men’s epee World Cup in Tallin, a men’s foil Grand Prix in Venice & a women’s sabre World Cup in Antalya.
