CELEBRATING THE START OF THE GBR PATHWAY JOURNEY

This week, to showcase the values of the GBR Pathway, we hosted two engaging online sessions – one with the fencers and one with their parents – to mark the first step in this important chapter.

The sessions focused on introducing the values and culture that underpin British Fencing, with a particular emphasis on the core value of respect. These conversations are a vital part of shaping a positive and supportive environment as our fencers prepare for their first international experience at the U14 Festival in Istanbul.

During the athlete session, we explored what the young fencers hope to gain from their GBR experience, from improving their fencing, to being part of a team, to achieving. The fencers also shared thoughtful reflections on what respect means to them – on and off the piste – and what kind of support they hope to receive from their parents and coaches throughout their journey.

In the parent and coach session, we shared the fencers’ perspectives and invited parents and coaches to reflect on their own roles in fostering a respectful and encouraging atmosphere. The discussion highlighted the importance of providing space, listening and asking what the young fencers need from their parents and coaches.

These sessions mark the first steps in a collaborative journey to recognise that with selection into the GBR Pathway comes responsibility. We look forward to supporting our young athletes as they grow, compete, and thrive on the GBR Pathway, whilst ensuring that the Be Safe, Have Fun, and Feel Welcome principle is achieved.
