COACH REQUIRED: PAUL DAVIS FENCING ACADEMY

Paul Davis Fencing Academy is looking for a full time Sabre Coach to assist in the development and delivery of the Academy Pathway Scheme for Junior (U20), Cadet (U17) and U14 athletes.

From Paul Davis Fencing Academy:

Reporting to the Academy Director the Academy Sabre Coach will assist the Academy Head Coach in the development and delivery of the Academy Pathway Scheme for Junior (U20), Cadet (U17) and U14 athletes.

In addition, the Academy Sabre Coach will work with Academy School networks to engage, inspire and empower youth Fencers and feed them into the pathway sessions at the Centre.

The Academy teaches over 1,200 children and young adults a week with the Performance members training 6 days a week. This role will include group and 1:1 delivery with scope for future growth, and success at the highest level. The role is full-time employed, with statutory paid holidays, sick pay.

Salary: £35,000-£40,000 per annum.

You will be responsible for:

• Delivering training sessions and camps. Planning and liaison with the Head Sabre Coach and Pathway Manager, the ability to deliver a range of physical warm-up and cool down exercises, technical and tactical footwork sessions, technical and tactical fencing exercises and scenarios, and to manage a large group of accomplished sabre fencers who compete at all levels from U14 domestic to senior World Championships.

• Delivering one-to-one lessons. Experience of coaching to a high level, with strong fundamental technique and an understanding of international sabre tactics. The ability to adapt to the style of fencing required by the Head Sabre Coach, whilst maintaining a creative approach to training.

• Delivery of school, youth, and development training. As part of the role’s objective in developing a pipeline of youth, cadet and junior fencers, the role will require the ability to deliver safe, engaging and effective school and youth training sessions. A key requirement will be establishing fundamental technical and tactical skills and instilling a love of the game in new fencers. The successful candidate will lead a school programme, as well as delivering development training sessions at the Centre.

• Competition coaching. The sabre coach will attend domestic and international competitions to support the Academy Fencers, and must have a strong piste-side presence, the ability to communicate tactical ideas clearly and concisely, and a professional demeanour.

• Planning and administration. The coach will manage and complete to a high standard the require administrative elements of the role to ensure a professional delivery of sessions.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• A strong background and proven track record in sabre coaching, with ambition to achieve high-level results and develop athletes over a long period of time.
• A sophisticated understanding of sabre tactics and international trends, and a track record of delivering lessons and training to at least national level
• Ability to deliver one-to-one lessons which address the individual needs of a range of fencers.
• Ability to work as part of a team, and a strong work ethic.
• Highly motivated with a positive attitude.
• Good communication skills and able to exercise both diplomacy and be assertive when required. Ability to communicate in English.
• Ability to work independently, multi-task and exercise good judgement at all times.
• Computer literate, with understanding of Microsoft Office software (especially Word and Excel).

Essential requirements:

  • Level 2 and above coaching qualification
  • Driving license
