EFC EUROFENCE LEAGUE FOR U23 & SENIORS

The European Fencing Confederation (EFC) is launching the Eurofence League, a new competition series for U23 and Senior fencers, streamlining the U23 category and replacing the former Fencing for Everyone (FFE) events.

Historically, there has been confusion between the two categories—U23 and FFE—due to their overlapping terminology.

  • U23: Previously allowed both under-23 and older fencers to compete.
  • FFE: Reserved strictly for fencers under the age of 23, previously nominated for Junior and U23 fencers by BF.

Since both were frequently referred to as U23 events, despite their differing eligibility criteria, this led to misunderstandings among athletes, organisers, and rankings.

Key Changes Moving Forward

To eliminate ambiguity, the EFC has officially introduced the Eurofence League, simplifying the competition system for the upcoming season:

  • The open category (U23 and older) will now be referred to as the Eurofence League.
  • The closed category (for fencers strictly under 23) will retain the name U23.

Additionally, FIE Satellite competitions may count toward Eurofence League rankings.

British Fencing (BF) is currently reviewing its position regarding these events, including potential nominations for Junior and Senior calendars. Consideration is also being given to the inclusion of team events. A further update will follow soon; however, BF cannot nominate these events at the Junior level until additional information becomes available.
