After three terms as President of British Fencing, Hilary Philbin MBE has announced her retirement from the role to focus on EFC commitments. The Board thanks Hilary for her service as President and opens the application process for the role for the 2024-28 term.
Hilary Philbin MBE was first appointed president in 2013. In 2021 she was re-appointed for a third term due to expire at the 2024 AGM (October 2024, exact date yet to be confirmed).
Hilary has announced that she will not be standing for a further term.
Speaking of her retirement as president Hilary said “Having been recently re-elected onto the European Fencing Confederation Executive Committee (Comex), I intend to be dedicating more of my time to this role. Fencing across the globe is facing a variety of challenges and this EFC position is an exciting opportunity for myself, and International Relations colleagues in British Fencing, to work with our European counterparts to address these challenges and build a strong future for international fencing in Europe”.
Georgina Usher, CEO said: “It has been a huge privilege to work along side Hilary over the last 10 years. As president she has adeptly steered BF in international fencing matters and it is thanks to her hard work and support that we have maintained our influential presence in FIE and EFC and commissions and councils through the years.”
“She is hugely respected by international colleagues and her recent election onto the EFC Comex is testament to the trust and faith placed in her to create a stronger future for European Fencing”.

She has represented the sport with dignity, professionalism and resilience in the face of often difficult circumstances and we wish her all success in her continuing role with the EFC. ”

In accordance with the Articles of British Fencing (73.) the President is appointed by the Board after open competition, subject to the approval of that appointment at the next AGM.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to read the description of the role of president of BF, paying particular attention to the person specification.
It is the aim of the Board to complete the open competition process prior to the 2024 AGM.
