UK SPORT CONFIRMS LA CYCLE INVESTMENT OF £1.575K INTO FENCING

UK Sport confirms a four year £1.575k award to support long term Olympic success in fencing.

British Fencing welcomes the news today that UK Sport has awarded a four year investment of £1.575k to support the long term acceleration of elite fencing in the UK to Olympic success, equivalent to an increase of 2% on the actual Paris cycle award.

BF is one of eleven Olympic and Paralympic sports to be awarded a ‘Development Funding’ investment. Development Funding (previously termed ‘Progression’) is designed to support the long-term medal potential of sports like fencing.

There are conditions attached to this award which will be explored in detail with UK Sport in January and further details on our future plans from April 2025 will be communicated by BF in due course.

Alongside the Olympic fencing award, UK Sport confirmed a four year investment into Paralympic fencing of £1.825k, an increase of 4% on the Paris cycle.

Georgina Usher, BF’s CEO said, “We welcome this funding support from UK Sport which is vital to the continued build of our elite performance system to support our most talented athletes seeking medal success in LA and beyond. The 2% increase will support our efforts to reduce the impact of inflation and we will be working across the sector to explore potential areas where we can deliver in partnership to reduce costs.”

Sally Munday, CEO of UK Sport, said, “It’s thanks to the unwavering support of the UK Government and our wonderful National Lottery players that we are able to announce this historic investment today, towards continuing to create the greatest decade of extraordinary sporting moments.

“The past few years have been tough for our sports with the delayed Tokyo Games and shortened Paris cycle, and we know finances remain under extreme pressure. We have looked to relieve some of this pressure through our investment today, however we know we must continue to innovate and collaborate, together, to grow a thriving sporting system that’s fit for the future.

“Huge credit to the leaders in our sports for all the hard work they’ve done, with us, over the past 18 months to put us in this brilliant position to be able to say we are ready to win well in the LA cycle and beyond.”
