After a brilliant weekend of fencing, the 2025 British Open Championships have come to a close. Read about the event’s growth since it started. Includes links to results, photos and videos.
Launched in 2023, the British Open Championships have since become a staple in the BF events portfolio. This year’s event took place at EIS Sheffield on the 5th-6th July. The weekend featured a variety of event categories, including Senior, Wheelchair, U14 and – new for this year – Veteran and Grand Veteran.
Unlike the Senior National Championships earlier in the year, in which competitors are invited, the Senior Open was open to all BF Compete members. This means that those not eligible to compete for GBR and international visitors were welcome to enter.
Likewise, the Wheelchair Open welcomed both international fencers and those who aren’t classified under the Paralympic system. This year marked the highest number of entries – 29 in total – since the event first launched in 2023, showing increasing participation in wheelchair fencing across classified and non-classified fencers.
The Under 14 Open, introduced in 2024, made its return this year as the first ranking event of the season. The event provided an opportunity for U14 fencers to gather valuable competition experience and gain ranking points at one of the biggest events in the UK.
For the first time, BF also hosted a Veteran (Cat 2+ and Grand Veteran) event as part of the Championships weekend. Events were staggered to allow eligible fencers to enter the Open Veterans and Senior events over the weekend. The competition resulted in Champions and medallists in both Veteran and Grand Veteran categories.
