SUCCESS AT 2021 FIE EXAMS FOR CHRIS LENNON

October 2021 saw the resumption of the scheduled FIE referee exams, held in Budapest, Hungary, the first since 2019. Chris Lennon, a member of the GBR Referee Pathway Programme, successfully passed his FIE epee exam adding to his FIE Foil licence gained in 2016.

Chris Lennon said on achieving his second FIE qualification, “I was tremendously grateful for the opportunity to attend the FIE exam in Budapest and delighted to have passed. The examination was particularly challenging after the suspension of fencing for such a long period without the opportunity to practice but the assistance of my fellow British referees in preparing as well as the delegates of the European Fencing Confederation who came to support the candidates.

“I am looking forward to using my new status as a double qualified FIE referee to represent Britain at higher levels when we return to international competition”.

Georgina Usher, BF’s CEO added, “On behalf of BF I’d like to extend my congratulations to Chris Lennon on gaining his second FIE licence. This result demonstrates that our referee training and development programme is producing high quality referees that meet the professional standards set by the FIE”.

Nickie Bailey, Referee Manager said, “The resumption of the FIE exams so close to the start of the first season back to fencing was an exciting opportunity for our pathway referees to resume their development journey. With the GBR Referee Pathway Programme growing, and the Level 3 assessment in place to increase numbers of referees qualified to join the Pathway Programme, this is a great time for referees to up-skill and support fencing both on a domestic and international level”.

The work of the GBR International Referee Programme is supported by UK Sport International Relations funding.
