LEICESTER FENCING CLUB TAKE ON WORLD RECORD

20th July 2016

Team Event World Record attempt for most participants

Leicester Fencing Club will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the highest number of participants in a team fencing competition on Sunday 14th August.  They are looking for willing volunteers to assist them in breaking the current record of 50 participants.

The club is targeting a new world record of 72 fencers of any sword type and want to hear from anyone that wants to get involved, whether as a fencer, time-keeper, coach, referee or supporter.

British Fencing’s Official Equipment provider, Leon Paul, are supplying pistes and scoring equipment, Curve Theatre has donated its facilities as host venue and both Leicester City Council and the Cities Mayor’s Office have thrown their backing behind the attempt.  Despite this the club is looking at running cost of about £2,000.

The club is looking to use this record attempt not only to raise awareness of themselves and fencing in general but also to raise money for local charities.  All fencers involved will be given sponsorship forms to collect money themselves and the club has set up a crowd funding page via Just Giving where you can donate money to the attempt.

Speaking about the record attempt, Club Chair, David Istance, "Leicester is now firmly established in sporting history with the amazing result of Leicester City Football Club and the Leicester Tigers Rugby Club and whilst our sport has not yet reached the acclaim of these sporting giants, we have the opportunity to make it stand out! In this Olympic year people will get a chance to see another sports success for the club, city and country as a whole by setting a new Guinness World Record in fencing. Set in the beautiful Curve Theatre in Leicester, we can break a world record in fencing, something which is out of reach for most of us in our normal day to day lives. The part of the individual will be small but the event will be spectacular and we will all walk away as world record holders, proudly able to say 'We did it!'"

If you are interested in getting involved, please register here or alternatively please drop the club’s Chairman, David an email.

British Fencing would like to take this opportunity to wish the club and everyone involved the very best of luck.
