BRITISH FENCING WELCOMES NEW FUNDING FOR ITS 3G STRATEGY GREEN, GROW, GOLD

17th December 2012

British Fencing today welcomed the Sport England announcement that more funding will be available for fencing in England in the next four year cycle  - to grow participation in fencing, especially for young people between 14 and 21; and to secure the Talent Pathway.  The extra funding will depend on British Fencing’s progress with both aims, year by year.

Sport England is making provision for £1.6m for fencing over the period 2013-2017, which will represent a 60% increase on its funding to British Fencing for the last four years.   This will enable British Fencing to make real progress with its 3G strategy - in particular, to get more young men and women fencing and to develop talent.

Speaking today, Peter King, interim CEO of British Fencing, said;  “This increased funding provision shows that our funding partners share our faith in fencing’s potential to grow and succeed.  We will make sure we deliver over the next four years and achieve real growth”.

Georgina Usher, GB fencer and British Fencing Board Director, said; "This funding is what we need to get more people fencing and to work for Olympic success across all six disciplines. In particular, I am delighted that this funding provision from Sport England will help create a three weapon pathway structure to support and train our talented youth and deliver future World Class Performance athletes”.

Ray Stafford, Chair of England Fencing, said; “England Fencing welcomes this increased funding provision which enables us to continue investment in our grass roots base - and bring more people into our fun and engaging sport”.
