2026 BRITISH OPEN SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS REFEREE PROVISIONS

Referee provision requirements for the 2026 British Open Senior Championships. The deadline is Monday 22nd June.

As in previous years, clubs are required to provide a referee for the British Open Senior Championships based on the number of fencers they enter. See below the threshold breakdown:

  • 1-4 fencers   – no referee
  • 5-9 fencers    – 1 referee
  • 10+ fencers  – 2 referees

Note that this quota is based on per weapon per day. For example, a club entering four fencers into Mixed/Men’s Epee and four into Women’s Foil is not required to provide a referee; however, if a club is entering five fencers into Mixed/Men’s Epee and three into Women’s Foil, the club is required to provide one referee.

Referee provision does not apply to the Open U14 and Wheelchair Championships.

BF wants to work with clubs where they are required to provide referees in accordance with their club entries, in a collaborative manner.

Please note, BF has already invited referees from our Referee Pathway Programme; therefore, these referees cannot be used by clubs. To see the Pathway Programme Referee Register, please click the link here.

If you are struggling to find a referee, BF can help. Please email [email protected] with the referee request, and we will add it to our mailing list and WhatsApp groups. Please get in touch before the deadline below.

Where clubs are required to provide a referee(s), they must inform BF of their referee name by Monday 22nd June 2026.

Where accommodation is required, BF is able to offer clubs a rate for accommodation costs, if there is availability, in which club-provided referees can stay in the official BF hotel. Please get in touch with [email protected] as soon as possible to discuss this.

BF is not looking to fine clubs, but will fine £250 in the following circumstances:

  • A club does not engage or respond to BF’s communications and fails to provide referees.
  • A club agrees to provide support (referee or other agreed support) following a conversation with BF and then fails to do so (excluding force majeure reasons).
