Budapest hosts first Junior Foil World Cup of the Season

This weekend, Harry Bird and Kamal Minott both made the round of 32 at the first Junior foil World Cup on the season in Budapest, Hungary. The men’s event had a massive entry of one hundred and seventy-five and all but Ben Bates and Samuel Finch made it through the first round.

Ciaran Archer, Dominic De Almeida, Daniel Kiss, Alan Lozovik and Sebastian Pallier were all knocked out in the round of 128 but Bird beat Hamlescher (GER) 15-8 and Minott knocked out De Jong (NED) 15-11.  Bird went on to beat S. Marino (GER) 15-14 before falling to J. Marino (USA) as Minott overcame Kuceba (LAT) 15-12 ahead of losing 15-8 to Rzadkowski (POL).

The title was taken by Samuel Moelis (USA) who beat Alexandre Ediri (FRA) in the final.  The bronze medals were picked up by two Italians, Davide Filippi and Tommaso Marini.

GB placings:  Bird 21, Minott 28, De Almeida 71, Kiss 87, Lozovik 107, Pallier 109, Archer 115, Finch 132 & Bates 135.

There were one hundred and five entries in the women’s event as Yasmin Campbell, Isabella Gill and Phoebe Newton-Hughes made the round of 64 before falling to Recher (FRA) 15-8, Simon (FRA) 15-11 and Duchnese (FRA) 15-5, respectively.  Jade Rowland was just edged out 15-14 by Virga (ROU) in the round of 128 but Kate Beardmore, Alice Campbell and Amber Moss were eliminated at the poule stage.

Marta Martyanova (RUS) beat teammate Adelya Abdrakmanova to take the title as Arianna Pappone (ITA) and Pia Ueltgesforth (GER) settled for joint bronze.
