BRITISH AMBASSADOR HOSTS SIGNING OF NEW GBR-ITA FENCING PARTNERSHIP

Today, British Fencing (BF) entered into a partnership with the Italian Fencing Federation (FIS) at a prestigious event hosted by the British Ambassador, Jill Morris, in Rome.  Led by the Presidents of both Federations, Hilary Philbin (BF) and Giorgio Scarso (FIS), the event was also attended by Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian Olympic Committee and Luca Pancalli, President of the Italian Paralympic Committee.  The agreement will see a close collaboration in a number of areas including athlete training & competition, referee & coaching activities and marketing, communication & promotion plans.  The signing took place in Villa Wolkonsky, which is the official residence of the British Ambassador to Italy.

The immediate outcomes from the agreement include:

  • inviting Italian fencers and their personal coaches to take part in an all weapon Cadet (under-17) training camp ahead of the Camden International (dates).
  • a review of BF’s communications strategy to align with joint GBR-ITA objectives (focussing initially on social media).
  • inviting Italian referees to assist and advise at BF’s forthcoming referee seminars

Jill Morris opened the event by saying, “It is an honour to host the beginning of this partnership between British and Italian Fencing.”

Speaking just after signing the agreement, British Fencing’s President, Hilary Philbin said, “I am delighted to be signing this agreement with FIS President, Giorgio Scarso, here in this beautiful palace.  British Fencing has a long history of friendship with Italian Fencing and we now look forward to working more closely together.  I am confident that this agreement will bring great benefits to British Fencing.”

Giorgio Scarso said, “Signing this agreement is very important to the Italian Fencing Federation.  This is our 77th agreement with another national federation because we believe that fencing is developed through these partnerships.”

In the coming weeks BF will work with Italian Fencing to agree implementation plans.
