Following the British Fencing Olympic Selection Panel meeting this morning in line with the ‘Detailed Selection Procedure for the Rio Olympic Games 2016 and the European Zone Qualification Event 2016’, the following athletes have been selected to be nominated to the BOA for the Men’s Foil at the Rio Olympics in August 2016:

  • James Davis – Individual and Team
  • Laurence Halsted – Individual and Team
  • Richard Kruse – Individual and Team
  • Marcus Mepstead – Reserve for the Team event

Please note – British Fencing is only responsible for the nomination to the BOA and they are responsible for the selection of the final team.  Their names will now be forwarded on to the BOA and they will confirm in due course the selections to Team GB.  The BOA will make the formal announcement and communication about all Team GB athletes.

In addition, in line with the ‘Detailed Selection Procedure for the Rio Olympic Games 2016 and the European Zone Qualification Event 2016’, the selectors announced the following athletes to represent GBR at the European Zone Qualification Event 2016:

  • Men’s Epee – Philip Marsh
  • Men’s Sabre – James Honeybone
  • Women’s Epee – Mary Cohen
  • Women’s Foil – Natalia Sheppard
  • Women’s Sabre – Katherine Kempe

Speaking of the selections Alex Newton, Performance Director said “Now that the initial official qualification period has finished we are pleased to be able to nominate to the BOA the athletes for the men’s foil team.  These are the athletes that secured the qualification and are now focussed on the best possible preparation for the Games.  I am also delighted to announce the athletes that have been selected for the European Zone competition on 16th/17th April and we are confident that they will be able to produce some great performances to secure their nomination to Team GB.”
