No medals for GB but the Women’s Sabre team took out Ukraine

With all the Cadet individual events over it was the turn of the Cadet Men’s Epee, Men’s Foil and Women’s Sabre teams to compete for the 2014 European titles.

Cadet Men’s Epee Team

Nineteen teams took part in this event including one from Great Britain (Dean, Jordan, Sinclair and Schneider as reserve).  In the round of 16 GB faced Estonia and beat them 38-35.  They drew the number one seeds, Hungary and were comprehensively beaten 45-19.  In the placings matches GB lost 45-36 to Germany and then 45-36 to Russia to finish eighth.

Poland continued their impressive form at these Championships, taking the title 45-43 in the gold medal match against Italy.  The bronze medal went to Hungary who beat France 45-25 in the third place play-off.

Cadet Men’s Foil Team

Great Britain (Kiss, Minnot, Feaster and Bird as reserve) was one of fifteen teams competing in this event and they beat Turkey 45-40 in the round of 16.  In the next round the Italian team beat them 45-27 pushing GB into the placings matches.  There they lost 45-43 to Hungary and then 45-31 to Germany to finish eighth.

Demonstrating their strength in this weapon at all age groups, Italy went on to win the title 45-34 over France with Poland taking the bronze 45-42 in a close match with Russia.

Cadet Women’s Sabre

A field of ten teams included one from Great Britain (Maxwell, Gladdish, Turnbull and Chart as reserve).  A very impressive win over Ukraine (45-38) in the round of 16 was the highlight of the day.  Russia beat GB in the round of 8, 45-30 that meant they had to fight for places 5-8.  Two close matches followed but the Great Britain team won both – 45-41 over Poland and 45-42 over Germany – to finish in 5^th place.

Russia beat France to the title, 45-36 whilst Hungary took the bronze medal beating Italy 45-39.

Speaking after the events, Chef de Mission, Joanna Cook said; “It was a tough day but the Women’s Sabre team really showed that they are a force to be reckoned with in beating Ukraine.  One more day of Cadet team events to go and a medal is not out of the question.”
