Gold again for Italy and Russia

The Cadet and Junior World Championships 2013 continued in Poreč, Croatia, with the team events in Men’s and Women’s Epee.

Junior Women’s Epee

There was no British involvement in this event.  Russia took the first semi-final 32-31 against Italy in a priority minute with 11 seconds on the clock and the priority against them.  Korea edged the USA team out 45-39 in a tight second semi-final.  The bronze medal was won by Italy in spectacular fashion as Santuccio (ITA) came from 5 hits down (30-25) in the final bout scoring 20 hits to take the fight 45-37 against the USA.  In the gold medal match Russia led Korea from the off and were 27-19 up by the end of the sixth bout.  They went on to take the World Championships title 41-35 in the final bout.

Junior Men’s Sabre

Great Britain had a bye through the round of 64 but then fell 45-39 to Mexico in the round of 32.  In the semi-finals both Italy and Hungary ran out easy winners 45-34 against Spain and China, respectively.  In the bronze medal match the scores were level after six legs at 25-25.  A call of non-combativity in the eight match saw Spain lead 29-27 against China and in a fast and furious finish Spain ran out 41-38 winners.  The gold medal match between Italy and Hungary was an interesting feast of fencing and sportsmanship with Fichera (ITA) staging a sit-in in the fifth leg after receiving two red cards for use of the back arm.  After ten minutes of protest the fight finished with Italy 25-18 up.  They then ran out easy winners 45-32 to take the gold medal on the penultimate day of the tournament.
