Matthew Dickinson Shines at European Cadet Epee Circuit Event

It was a great start to the year for Matthew Dickinson who finished just outside the medals in fifth place at the European Cadet Circuit Epee event in Krakow, Poland at the weekend.

He formed part of a massive field of two hundred and three fencers in the first cadet circuit event of the New Year.  He dropped one of his five first round fights which meant he was ranked forty-third for the second round of poule matches.  Six victories from six fights in that round saw him ranked third for the direct elimination stage.  A bye through the round of 128 was followed by victories over Smieja (POL) 15-13, Cichaczewski (POL) 15-12 and Contrepois (FRA) 12-9 to ensure a quarterfinal finish.

He just missed out on a medal after a tough fight with another French fencer, Pianfetti, which he lost 15-11 to finish fifth.  Neisser Loyola (BEL) won the gold medal match against Axel Mallo (FRA) 15-12 as Arthur Philippe (FRA) and Andric Pianfetti secured the bronze medals.  Full results for the event can be found here.

Matthew has now made the quarterfinal at two cadet circuit events this season which puts him in the sixteen in the European ranking list.
