2019 FIE London Senior Satellites Cancelled

It is with deep regret that British Fencing is no longer in a financial position to continue to run the Foil and Sabre FIE Senior London Satellites. This is due to the combined challenge of restrictions on the FIE Calendar and falling government funding which affects our ongoing financial status and available resources.

Each international event weekend BF host loses around £10k (excl. staff time), in part due to the requirements placed on the competition and in part the  limits on entry fees. Putting multiple competitions on the same weekend is one of the best ways to minimise losses.

However, recent changes to the FIE Calendar has meant that we are unable to host the Eden Cup and Leon Paul FIE Senior Satellite on the same weekend.

Likewise calendar changes have meant that it is not possible to schedule the Camden EFC U17 event and the Sabre FIE Senior Satellite on the same weekend in the 2019-20 season.

BF remain committed to delivering the Eden Cup Foil Junior World Cup to the highest of standards in London. As last season, we will run The London Cup – a Senior Foil event designated for EFC U23 and Domestic ranking points alongside the Eden Cup. This will allow us to keep a Senior international competition in the calendar on that weekend.

We hope that in the future, possibly after Tokyo2020, should there be more flexibility around the FIE calendar we could return the London FIE Foil Senior Satellite – historically the largest Satellite competition in the world in any weapon – to it’s original position alongside the Eden Cup FIE Foil Junior World Cup.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has helped to make these competitions so successful over the years – fencers, coaches, referees, volunteers and partners.
