GO/FENCE AT SAINSBURY’S SCHOOL GAMES

British Fencing provide taster sessions for 500 young people

On Wednesday 9^th May, in front of the iconic backdrop of the Olympic Stadium, British Fencing delivered GO/FENCE taster sessions to approximately 500 schoolchildren as part of the Sainsbury’s School Games.

Approximately 45,000 school children from across the country visited the Olympic Park to witness the culmination of the athletics, cycling and swimming events.  In addition various supporting activities were situated on the Park, amongst which was the Youth Sport Trust’s Change4Life Zone, where British Fencing were situated.

Speaking after the event, British Fencing’s Leadership Coordinator, Jack Boteler said; “To be able to put a sword in the hand of approximately 500 young people was such a fantastic opportunity for British Fencing.  Seeing hordes of children queuing up, eager to have a go at our sport and leaving with a smile on their face was exceptionally pleasing.  Events such as this really go to show just how effective the GO/FENCE programme can be when promoting our sport.  I would like to thank the School Games, the Youth Sport Trust and Change4Life for giving us the chance to deliver this taster session, David Craig for assisting with the sessions and in particular Baldip and Hilary Sahota for lending equipment.  We are also grateful to Daniel Randall, who led all the sessions and worked tirelessly throughout the day.”
