Rio Women’s Epee World Cup & Warsaw Men’s Sabre Grand Prix
Strong Weekend for the Germans and Koreans
It was the penultimate round on the major international events calendar at the weekend with competitions in Rio de Janeiro and Warsaw.
Men’s Sabre Grand Prix – Warsaw
Just two British fencers took part in this event making up a field of 121. Aiyenuro (V3D3) made the first round cut but Alex Crutchett (V2D4) did not. In the single stage preliminary knockout Aiyenuro narrowly lost 15-12 to Trushakov (RUS). Buikevich (BLR) took the title beating Occhuizzi (ITA) 15-14 in the final. Wagner (GER) and Gu (KOR) took the bronze medals home.
GB Individual Placings: Aiyenuro 82nd & Crutchett 104th.
Women’s Epee World Cup – Rio de Janeiro
No British fencers took part in this event which was won by Shin (KOR) who beat Heidemann (GER) 6-5. The two last met in a controversial semi-final at the London Olympic Games which the German won. The bronze medals went to Sozanska (GER) and Sun (CHN).
In team event China beat Russia 45-36 to take the gold medal whilst Romania beat Sweden 45-35 to take the bronze medal.
The final weekend of the senior international circuit sees a Men’s Foil Grand Prix in Havana, a Men’s Epee World Cup in Buenos Aires, a Women’s Foil Grand Prix in Paris & a Women’s Sabre Grand Prix in Tianjin.
