International Result Round Up – Women’s Epee Leipzig World Cup, Men’s Foil Havana World Cup, Men’s Epee Buenos Aires World Cup

Reports from the final senior ranking events ahead of London 2012

Leipzig, Havana and Buenos Aires hosted the last major ranking events ahead of the London Olympic Games at the weekend.

Women’s Epee World Cup – Leipzig

Barrington, Bottoms, Chang, C. Lawrence, MacKinnon and McGeever were the British contingent in a field of 125 fencers in Leipzig.  Bottoms (V4D2), Lawrence (V2D4), MacKinnon (V3D3) and McGeever (V2D4) progressed through the poule stages but Barrington (V1D5) and Chang (V2D4) did not survive the cut.  The incomplete first preliminary draw saw Bottoms and MacKinnon earning byes whilst McGeever defeated Cheung (HKG) 15-7 but Lawrence fell 15-11 to Quondamcarlo (ITA).  Only McGeever made the round of 64 in beating Briasco (ITA) 15-13 whilst Bottoms lost 15-12 to Gohner (GER) and MacKinnon was defeated 15-14 by Nelip (POL).  In the round of 64 McGeever fell 15-8 to the number one seed Na (CHN).  The event was won by Coquin (FRA) who beat Embrich (EST) 15-12 to take the gold medal.  The bronze medals went to Dinu (ROU) and Kuusk (EST).

There were fifteen entries to the team event that was won by the Poland who beat Estonia 45-38.  The bronze medal went to Italy who beat the USA 45-44.  Great Britain entered a team of Chang, Mackinnon and McGeever lost 45-39 to the USA in the round of 16 and in the placing matches lost 45-43 to Canada, had a bye and then lost 45-32 to Switzerland to finish 14th.

GB individual placings:  McGeever 64th, Bottoms 71st, MacKinnon 79th, Lawrence 103rd, Chang 105th and Barrington 115th.

Men’s Foil World Cup – Havana

Only Ben Peggs and Husayn Rososky competed in the Havana World Cup, joining a field of 102 fencers.  Both fencers made the round of 64 but Peggs was eliminated 15-9 by Imboden (USA) and Rosowsky lost 15-7 to Simon (FRA).  The event was won by Mertine (FRA) who beat Avola (ITA) 15-8 with Biando (ITA) and Aspromonte (ITA) taking the bronze medals.

Italy won the team event beating China 45-38 with Egypt in the bronze medal place by beating France.  Great Britain didn’t enter a team.

GB Individual placings:  Rosowsky 34th and Peggs 64th.

Men’s Epee World Cup – Buenos Aires

No Brits took part in this World Cup.  The event was won by Kauter (SUI) who beat Heinzer (SUI) 15-6.  The bronze medals went to Garozzo (ITA) and Szenyi (HUN).

Hungary won the team event beating Canada 45-21 with Switzerland in the bronze medal place by beating the USA 45-31.
