Deary, Honeybone and Itzkowitz make Moscow Grand Prix 64

Men’s Sabre

Five British fencers took part in the men’s event in Moscow at the weekend.  William Deary (V4D2), James Honeybone (V4D2) and Jonathan Webb (V3D3) all did enough to progress through the first round and receive byes through the first of two preliminary knockout fights.  Curtis Miller (V2D4) progressed through the first round but then lost 15-7 to Huebner (GER) in the first preliminary.  Soji Aiyenuro (V2D4) just missed the first round cut.

In the second round of preliminary fights Deary beat Karim (KAZ) 15-9, Honeybone defeated Trushakov (RUS) 15-10 but Natanzon (USA) beat Webb 15-8.  On the second day of the event both British fencers were eliminated in the round of 64 by Russian opponents – Yakimenko beat Deary 15-6 and Ibragimov knocked out Honeybone 15-6.

Luca Curatoli (ITA) took the gold medal by beating Gu Bongil (KOR) in the final as Kim Junghwan (KOR) and Aron Szilagyi (HUN) went home with the bronze medals.

Women’s Sabre

Three British fencers were amongst the field of one hundred and forty-two in Russia.  Aliya Itzkowitz (V5D1) earned a bye straight through to the round of 64 after a great first round performance.  Alexandra Davis and Rachel Lasance did not win any of their first round matches and were eliminated.  Itkowitz faced Pascu (ROU) on the final day of the event but lost 15-8.

Bianca Pascu went on to share the bronze medal position with Caroline Queroli (FRA) as Charlotte Lembach (FRA) took the gold medal by beating Anna Marton (HUN) in the final.
