Italy take the spoils in the Junior team events

The Junior European Championships concluded in Budapest with two days of team events.

Men’s Epee Team

Great Britain were one of 22 teams to compete in this event and drew the Czech Republic in the round of 32.  The GB team prevailed 45-35 and faced Poland next.  The Poles proved too strong for GB winning 45-36.  In the placings matches GB lost 45-38 to Denmark, 45-36 to Israel before beating Belgium 45-34 to finish 15th.  Italy took the gold medal by beating Russia 45-36 in the final.  Germany beat Spain 45-39 to take the bronze medal.

Men’s Foil Team

A field of 15 teams took part in this event including one from Britain who drew Israel in the round of 16. GB confidently beat them 45-32.  A tight match followed in the round of 8 but GB overcame Hungary 45-43.  Italy were too strong for the British team in the semi-finals and won 45-33.  In the bronze medal match Great Britain trailed Germany 40-33 going into the final leg but Alex Tofalides produced a match-winning display taking the fight 45-44.  Italy beat Russia 45-26 to take the gold medal.

Women’s Sabre Team

Only 11 teams took part in this event which Great Britain did not enter.  Hungary defeated France 45-44 to take the gold medal whilst Russia beat Ukraine 45-27 to take the bronze.

Women’s Epee Team

Fifteen teams took part in this event.  GB did not enter.  Russia beat Estonia 45-20 to take the gold medal and Ukraine took the bronze medal by beating Hungary 45-27.

Women’s Foil Team

Great Britain did not enter this event which featured nine teams.  The event was won by Italy who beat Russia 45-33 in the gold medal match.  France beat Hungary 45-39 to take the bronze medal.

Men’s Sabre Team

A field of 13 teams took part in this event which Great Britain did not enter.  Italy went on to win the European title by beating Germany 45-44.  Hungary overcame Russia 45-39 to take the bronze medal.
