On Thursday, UK Sport will be announcing the 2015 milestone targets for each funded Olympic and Paralympic sport for this season. Milestone targets are set with UK Sport at the beginning of each funding year for the identified and agreed ‘milestone event’. In most sports this is the World Championships and fencing is no exception.
As a result of the change in status of fencing from just a podium potential sport to now include podium in an individual event, this year our milestone target reflects this change. For the World Championships, Moscow, July 2015 our milestone target against which, amongst other factors, our performance progress will be measured is:
1 x L8 – individual event
In addition to this target, we have agreed with UK Sport progression targets for the podium potential funded men’s sabre and men’s foil squads. However, these will not be included in the announcement nor in the reporting by UK Sport at the end of the summer season.
The results at our World Championships will be discussed with UK Sport at our annual review meeting in December 2015, alongside a report on the progression of the two squads including but not limited to, the progression of identified athletes, results across the season, the implementation of a world class science and medicine programme and the overall confidence UK Sport have in the performance programme that is in place.
