Selection Policy

The current GBR 2024-25 Selection Policy is applicable to this event, with the following changes to 109 and 124 as marked in bold.

109. Rationales – Selections made for Satellites, World Cups and Zonal (European) and World Championships are guided by the following grounds:

  • Los Angeles Qualification – ensure that the stated medal target in the LA 2028 World Class Programme submission to UK Sport, 3-6 medals, has the most substantial chance of success by ensuring those with proven and identifiable medal potential are given priority in the selection process.
  • Future Paralympic Qualification – promote the development of a pipeline of athletes capable of success in future Paralympic Games 2032 and beyond.
    124. The LA Qualification rationale will guide the Para Fencing Championships Selection Panel (PCSP).

When more information is available from IPC, World Ability Sport and World Para Fencing in regards to LA 2028 qualification this selection document will be further reviewed and material changes (rather than, for example, the like for like replacement of ‘Paris’ with ‘LA’) put out for community consultation.

For Appeals and Complaints, please read below. Please note that selections are subject to appeal.

Appeals & Complaints (Section 13 – extract from the Selection Policy)

  1. Any athlete who has not achieved the eligibility criteria and qualifying performance standards for automatic selection for any International Competitions or Major Championships shall have no right of appeal against non-selection for these competitions.
  2. Any athlete who has not completed and submitted a ‘GBR Discretionary Selection Form’ shall have no right of appeal against non-selection for these competitions.
  3. Any athlete who has not provided a completed Athlete Assessment Form (submitted as part of the Selection Application Form where applicable) shall have no right of appeal against non-selection for these competitions.
  4. Submitting the Selection Application Form allows the athlete to provide relevant data to the Selection Panel. An athlete shall have no right of appeal against non-selection on the grounds that the data supplied by the athlete was missing or inaccurate.

In cases of disappointment that need to be addressed, we kindly ask parents and coaches to encourage open communication. This is a crucial part of an athlete’s development journey and will allow for a better understanding of the selection process and the path to future selection.

We understand that selection decisions can be emotionally charged. We kindly request parents and coaches to refrain from behaving in ways that may amount to abuse or harassment towards BF staff, selectors, and coaches. Such behaviour includes excessive calling, messaging, emailing, and making personal threats. Please note that any such behaviour will be reported for disciplinary action.

The deadline for appeals is Wednesday 18th June, 5pm.
