Two Brits in top eight of Leon Paul International Cup

Following Kristjan Archer’s quarterfinal finish in Saturday’s Eden Cup, Ben Peggs and Amol Rattan finished sixth and seventh respectively in the Leon Paul Cup – a senior men’s foil FIE satellite event held in London.  The day started with a field of 157 competitors from 30 nations.

Peggs won four of his five first round matches giving him 31st seed for the knockout stages with Rattan winning four out of six first round matches making him 51st seed. 

Peggs progressed to the top eight by beating Post (NED) 15-2, Borst (NED) 15-11, the number two seed, De Vizzi (ITA) 15-8 and Serri (FRA) 15-11.  Meanwhile Rattan beat Gross (ISR) 15-13, Tsoronis (DEN) 15-12, Siess (POL) 15-11 and the number three seed, Kontochristo (GRE) 15-12 to reach the quarterfinal.

Whilst both British fencers took the lead in their quarterfinal matches they lost; Peggs, 15-6 to Mazza (ITA) and Rattan, 15-7 to Matsuyama. 

The tournament was won by Garozzoa (ITA) who beat Mazza (HUN) to the gold medal 15-8 with the bronze medals going to Nagashima (JPN) and Matsuyama (JPN).
