FIE announce update to Tokyo Games Qualification

BF received a communication this morning from the FIE which contained information regarding the FIE approach to Olympic qualification:

The results and qualifications obtained until March 2020 are retained. The rankings are “frozen” and will be reactivated once we will be able to hold the last following events, counting for the Olympic qualification and which had been postponed:

  • Men’s and Women’s Foil Grand Prix
  • Women’s Sabre World Cup
  • Men’s Epée World Cup
  • Men’s Sabre World Cup
  • Women’s Epée World Cup

The events above, followed by the four zonal qualifying events, will be held when:

  • The global health situation will be safe
  • Fair and adequate training and preparation of athletes can take place
  • No federations will be prevented from participation
  • International competitions, including several “preparatory” World Cup/Grand Prix competitions, have taken place beforehand.

The letter can be read in full here.

BF has also started reviewing the Zonal selection policy schedule in light of existing and further likely changes to the competition schedule. There will be the opportunity for formal athlete consultation, however GBR athletes and their coaches are welcome at any time to send any views that you may have directly to [email protected] with the subject ‘Zonal Selection Policy’ cc’ing [email protected] (Please note that until the FIE have confirmed dates of the events we are unable to reissue the finalised policy).

In the meantime we continue to encourage all our athletes, their families and support teams to please look after both your physical and mental well being to be as ready as possible for a return to sparring and competition. Please get in contact if you need any help with any of these aspects. This challenging and unsettling lockdown period will inevitably pass and together we will need to find every opportunity to maximise your international performances and support your qualification journeys.
