URGENT UPDATE – 2023 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 16-18 JUNE, PLOVDIV

EFC announces that the Individual European Championships will be held on 16-18th June 2023 in Plovdiv.

The EFC announced last night in a press release that the individual European Championships will be held on 16-18th June in Plovdiv.

The European Games will still go ahead, with the Team Event at the Games counting for Olympic qualification points.

However, in light of the participation restrictions for neutral athletes, the FIE has confirmed that the “individual fencing competitions of the European Games 2023 are not to be accepted as Individual European Championships 2023 and are not going to be valid for Olympic qualification points“.

This means that the European Fencing Confederation must organise a separated Individual European Championship 2023 in June, before the WCH in Milan. The points awarded in this competition will be valid for Olympic qualification.

Selection

All athletes that have been selected to fence in the European Games will automatically be selected for this European Championships.

All athletes that have been selected for the World Championships in July 2023 will automatically be selected for this European Championships.

The BF staff team, with the support of the Athlete Rep Panel, has been contingency planning for this outcome since Saturday.

Athletes (and parents of U18s) will have already received emails, and should expect more – if there is any athlete that has not received emails about the European Championships please contact [email protected]

Please note that there is no official confirmation in writing over schedule, however BF has already made provisional accommodation arrangements for the full squad.

BF has published a web page for selected athletes, parents of U18s and coaches where we will post more information as and when we have it.
