GREAT BRITAIN CLAIM MEN’S TEAM FOIL WORLD BRONZE

GB defeat World Number 1 team USA on way to World Bronze

Great Britain saved their best performance at this year’s Cadet & Junior World Championships for the last day, as the Junior Men’s Foil team claimed a bronze medal on Sunday.

Jai Birch, Alex Lloyd, Rajan Rai and Harry Bird (in reserve) started the day strongly, beating Venezuela 45-31 and then Egypt 45-39 to make the quarterfinal.  There they faced the World number one team, the USA, who they beat 45-41.

In the semi-finals, they lost to Japan 45-18 but went on to beat Latvia 45-35 to clinch the bronze medal.  Japan went on to win, beating Italy 45-44 in the gold medal match.

Maciej Wojtkowiak, GBR Lead Talent Coach for foil said; “I am very proud of the boys as they were not afraid of setting high goals and remained determined to achieve them.  Our main focus has always been on the team event and I am thrilled that we managed to deliver such a fantastic performance.  I would also like to thank all the individual coaches whose hard work contributed to the team’s great success.”
