2024 BF HONOURS: ARLEN VEYSEY

As nominations open for the 2025 BF Honours, we’re shining a spotlight on last year’s recipients. In this feature, we speak to Arlen Veysey, who received an Award of Merit for volunteer services to fencing events.

Tell us a little about the work you do to support fencing.

During my time at the University of Exeter Fencing Club, I volunteered on the committee throughout my time there and was Club Captain during my final year. I have helped to run British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) events including individual nationals and the regional series, as well as other events across the country. One of my favourite annual activities is organising and running the Exeter Open with the help of the amazing people at the University of Exeter Fencing Club.

I have helped at BF events in a variety of roles, notably at the Cardiff World Cup in January which was a fantastic experience. Over the last two years, I have also been supporting the use of the video replay kit at events and providing technical support. I try to support fencing in any way I can – it is a great experience to learn how different roles work.

What’s your favourite memory of your time volunteering in fencing?

My favourite memory of my time volunteering in fencing so far has to be setting up the Exeter Open during my time at the University of Exeter Fencing Club. Setting up a fencing competition whilst working as Club Captain and studying for my Master’s degree was challenging but such a rewarding experience. It has been a pleasure to be invited back each year since to run the event and get the university club involved in all the different aspects of event management.

What does it mean to receive the 2024 BF Honours award?

It really means a lot to me because I love fencing, and I am glad that the work I am doing is helpful in some way. I am thankful to be able to give something back to this sport and the amazing people in the community.

What would you say to people considering volunteering in fencing or sport in general?

Volunteering in fencing is an amazing experience because you get to work alongside such wonderful people in the fencing community and contribute to the sport in so many different ways. It is so easy to get involved and you can learn so many new skills.
