INCLUSION OF 2027 EURO CHAMPIONSHIPS IN EUROPEAN GAMES – SELECTION PROCESS UPDATE

As the 2027 European Championships will be part of the 2027 European Games in Istanbul, a reminder that this impacts the selection process and athletes looking to be selected will need to start planning now, supported by their coaches.

On the 13th June in Genoa, the EFC Congress confirmed that the 2027 Senior European Championships will take place as part of the European Games.

These Games will be the fourth edition of the European Games, awarded to Istanbul by the European Olympic Committee (EOC).

As an EOC event, selection rights for the event sit with the National Olympic Committees. For Great Britain, this means that British Fencing will nominate athletes to the British Olympic Association (Team GB) for selection.

Performance standards for nomination of individuals and teams will be agreed with Team GB. These are likely to be strictly adhered to with little/no discretion and will be confirmed in consultation with the BOA in the coming months. Athletes looking to be nominated should:

  • Update their Individual Athlete Development Plans (IADPs) to include European Games 2027 qualification as a performance goal. Click here for more information on how to create and update your IADP.
  • Submit their updated IADP to the GBR Pathway team before 1st January 2026 using this submission form. Please select ‘Senior Europeans’ in the competition drop-down menu.
  • Athletes should also plan to contribute financially. The costs of attending this event are not fully covered by Team GB or BF (the athlete contribution in 2023 was £500 per athlete).
