Becoming part of a GBR Athlete Development Centre

British Fencing are looking for clubs and organisations that embody the values of the GBR Programmes and can actively demonstrate a ‘growth-mindset’ in relation to their ongoing development and progression of holistic athletes.  We look for clubs that:

  • can demonstrate an ability to connect and collaborate with the wider club network both locally and nationally
  • are forward thinking in terms of developing their coaches both in number and in skill
  • set the highest of standards in terms of the safeguarding and welfare of their athletes
  • continuously seek new and innovative ways of supporting and developing their athletes.

Status of a Centre is awarded for a two-year-period, with a yearly update of the self-assessment accreditation.

The Centres will provide a link into the Athlete Development Programme for athletes as they make their first steps from clubs into GBR performance fencing. Centres will provide fencers with wider development opportunities, including increased and appropriate sparring, S&C and coaching that is tailored to their needs. It is expected that there will be a sufficient number of identified fencers who will not need to travel for more than 45 minutes to attend the centre.
