IKSAN 2025: PARA FENCING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND-UP

The Para Fencing World Championships took place in Iksan, South Korea, from 2nd-7th September 2025, with GBR taking home three medals – a mini-round up, with the full report coming in the October 2025 issue of The Sword.

Following on from his victory in the Men’s Foil B at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Dimitri Coutya stormed through to claim the world title in the Individual Men’s Foil B.

He faced Feng Yanke (CHN) in a rematch of their Paralympics Paris 2024 final, with Coutya winning 15-11.

“It’s my first competition back from Paris so it’s mentally tough to be in such an intense environment with incredibly tough athletes,” Coutya said.

“So it feels incredible to have come home with the gold today. I’ve been chasing it for a long time.”

Coutya also claimed the bronze medal in the Individual Men’s Epee B, defeating Yohan Peter (FRA) 15-5.

Day four in Iksan saw GBR’s Men’s Epee team finish 4th. Dimitri Coutya, Piers Gilliver, Oliver Lam-Watson and Joshua Waddell suffered narrow defeats but gained valuable experience for the future.

On the final day of the Championships, GBR’s Men’s Foil team returned to the podium. Piers Gilliver, Oliver Lam-Watson, Josh Waddell, and Dimitri Coutya narrowly missed gold in a hard-fought final against China, securing the silver medal.

The Para Fencing Worlds also welcomed GBR’s new Women’s Sabre team. Gemma Collis, Emily Holder, Justine Moore and Susan Seddon-Cowell.

The team put up an excellent fight throughout the day by claiming victories against Brazil and France. Despite a loss to Thailand, they weren’t out yet. Remaining strong against Hungary, the team was defeated by only one point.

 

Referee Spotlight

GBR referees Mike Salter and Sean Grundy were in Iksan for the Para Fencing World Championships.

On day one, they refereed the Men’s Sabre A and B semi-final, and served as video referees for the bronze medal matches.

Jessica Zhang refereed the epee and foil events, and served as video referee for several semi-final matches.

It was a week of personal achievements and learning opportunities at the Para Fencing World Championships 2025. We would like to thank our athletes, coaches and support staff for bringing out the best in each other, as well as the officials, referees and volunteers for making the event possible.
