On the first day of the event, Pavel won four of five of his poule fights to go into the direct elimination round seeded 2nd. His first fight was against Georgia’s Aleksandre Aptsiauri, which he won 15-8. This took Pavel into the final against Lazare Chitadze (GEO), where he was defeated to take silver.

On the following day, Aleksandra went into the direct elimination round seeded 7th, after winning three out of her five poule fights. She defeated Elene Lagazidze (GEO) 15-3 in the last 16, before going on to beat Natali Abashidze (GEO) 15-8 in the last 8. Having secured a medal, Aleksandra faced Nia Gvantseladze (GEO) and defeated her 12-8. She was then defeated by Singapore’s Linao Zhang 15-9 in the final, taking silver.

Aleksandra and Pavel said:

“It feels really nice to receive a medal, but we know we’re still at the beginning and have a lot to learn. We’ll keep training hard and challenging ourselves — there are so many amazing fencers we hope to face (and maybe beat!) one day.

“We also want to thank our club, ZFW, and our coach, Michal Janda, for always being so patient, supportive, and believing in us every step of the way.”
