REFEREE REGISTERS

British Fencing operates a register of referees, it is required that all referees are to be members of British Fencing (supporter level is sufficient).  If you are not yet on the register, information on how to become a registered referee can be found here.

The register is now updated live from our database and is shown in two ways – by Names and by Regions.

Please note the following:

• Referees under 18 will NOT be on the published register but will be held on the main un-published register. Referees under 18 should not referee above their age group.
• L1 indicates those who have passed their L2 theory exam but have not yet passed a practical assessment
• L2 indicates those who have passed both the theory and practical assessments at Level 2
• Level 3t indicates those who have passed the Level 3 theory assessment and are undertaking the Level 3 practical assessments to gain their full Level 3 qualification.
• FIE* indicates those who are no longer classed as active on the FIE register due to age or activity levels.
• Please note if the membership has expired then a referees entry will be hidden until such time as the membership is renewed – without valid membership then the referee will not be insured for this role by British Fencing. If membership has lapsed for more than three months, then the referee will be removed from the register. They can be reinstated once membership has been renewed. Please inform the register manager of any changes to the membership status.

British Fencing Wheelchair Referee Register (IWAS) 2024-25

A brief explanation of the IWAS referee classifications can be seen below:

Candidate (Ca) – a referee who has passed the theory examination but not yet passed either of the two practical examinations for that specific weapon

Provisional (P) – a referee who has passed the theory examination and first practical examination for a particular weapon but not the final practical examination

IWAS B (B) – a referee who has passed the theory examination and both practical examinations for a particular weapon and is registered with IWAS as an active referee
