BF LAUNCHES LEADERSHIP THROUGH FENCING

BF has launched the Leadership Through Fencing award, in partnership with the Leadership Skills Foundation. The award uses fencing to provide young people with personal and professional skills, supporting them in education and employment.

The Leadership Through Fencing award is a new and exciting programme, made possible through a partnership between BF and the Leadership Skills Foundation. Founded in 1981, the Leadership Skills Foundation aims to provide young people with essential employability skills to assist them with succeeding across education and job opportunities. Working with numerous NGBs and sporting bodies across the UK, Leadership Through Fencing is the most recent project launched by Leadership Skills Foundation.

The programme will be run in schools, activity providers, Scout groups, clubs and leisure centres. It is aimed towards 11- and 17-year-olds, providing them with practical experience as they prepare for further education and employment opportunities. While going through the programme, students will take away the 5 key leadership skills:

  1. Communication
  2. Confidence
  3. Teamwork
  4. Organisation
  5. Problem Solving

Once the programme has been successfully completed, students will officially be a Fencing Leader. They will receive a nationally recognised and accredited award from BF, powered by the Leadership Skills Foundation.

Chris Turner, BF Head of Coaching and Workforce, oversaw the project development. He said:

“The BF Leadership Through Fencing award is an ideal opportunity for young people to develop key leadership skills and support the sport. Through the course, you’ll use fencing to build skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving combined with practical activities to support fencing in your club, school or area. Who knows, this could be the start of an exciting journey.”

Richard Norman, Chief Executive of the Leadership Skills Foundation, said:

“Creating opportunities for young people to explore and develop confidence in their skills is critical for young people to thrive within sport and in life in general.

“As such, we are excited to be partnering with BF to embed essential skill development within another national governing body leadership programme.

“Leadership Through Fencing will empower so many young people to enhance their essential skills and is an exciting opportunity for the fencers of today to become future leaders in their sporting community.”
