FIRST OPEN CORE COACH DAY IN BIRMINGHAM JUNE 2026

Coaches, clubs, and organisations came together on 14th June 2026 at Alexander Stadium for a practical and collaborative Open Core Coach day, gaining the skills to deliver fencing sessions for beginners.

Individuals and organisations from across the Midlands came together on 14th June 2026 at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham for our first Open Core Coach day.

Core Coach is designed for community organisations that use multi-sport staff, such as schools, uniformed groups, educational activity providers, and holiday activity providers. It is an entry-point course, equipping participants with the skills and confidence to deliver a one-hour fencing taster session or six-hour pre-planned taster programme.

Historically, BF’s Core Coach offer has only been available on demand, meaning that organisations needed to request a course in order to train their staff and volunteers.

To better suit various sizes of organisations, BF launched a new Open Core Coach format in April this year, alongside the traditional on-demand Core Coach format. Now, people from an organisation can book their place on pre-scheduled courses across the country.

The first Open Core Coach day took place this month in Birmingham, bringing together individuals working across different environments, from grassroots clubs to schools and Scout groups. The Birmingham event demonstrated how this approach can support consistency in coaching delivery while supporting small organisations and individuals.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a range of practical sessions focused on Core Coach principles, coaching foundations, and effective communication. A strong emphasis was placed on adapting ideas in real time, allowing attendees to learn about inclusive sport and fencing games and develop their skills in a supportive environment.

The Open Core Coach day forms part of BF’s ongoing work to make coaching development opportunities more accessible to a wider audience, including non-members, clubs, and partner organisations.

Building on the success of the Birmingham event, additional Open Core Coach days are expected to be announced soon, offering further opportunities for individuals and organisations to learn how to deliver fencing activities.
