Chairman; “No change to the British Fencing Olympic Selection Policy as qualification enters the final phase”
At their meeting in December, the Directors of the British Fencing Board unanimously agreed the proposal of the Performance Manager Alex Newton, to keep the existing Olympic Selection Policy.
The British Fencing Performance Team will propose athletes for the eight host nation places to the selection panel having taken advice from the newly established Performance Advisory Group. The selection panel will be appointed by the Board, in accordance with the recommendations within the selection policy – i.e. to consist of an independent Chair and three people from outside the sport who understand performance selection processes.
The Board also agreed the additional detailed criteria for the selection of athletes for the European Zone Olympic Qualification competition in April following the request by athletes for greater clarity over selection.
The Chairman of the Board David Teasdale said: “As we enter the final phase of Olympic qualification it is important the athletes are focussed on the job in hand and not distracted by any changes to the existing selection document. I am confident we will put together a fully independent selection panel to ensure that the athletes selected will meet the Board objectives of medal performances in 2012 and 2016.”
