CADET & JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 REPORT – DAY 4
Junior World Championships start with King finishing 11th in the Women’s Foil
The Junior World Championships started today with the Men’s Sabre and Women’s Foil events in Moscow’s Olympic stadium.
Men’s Sabre
Soji Aiyunero, Harry Boteler and Curtis Miller joined a field of 109 fencers in the Junior Men’s Sabre World Championships.
Aiyenuro started the best winning four of his six first round fights with Boteler winning three out of five and Miller winning two out of six. Aiyunero and Boteler had byes through the incomplete round of 128 whilst Miller beat Vega (MEX) 15-7. In the round of 64 Aiyunero beat Harima (JPN) 15-13 but Boteler and Miller went out to Chang (HKG) 15-8 and Berre (ITA) 15-7 respectively. In the round of 32 Aiyunero faced Low (HKG) who had knocked out the number 3 seed Mambetbayev (KAZ) in the previous round. Aiyunero wasn’t able to overcome his opponent going down 15-8.
The event was won by Kim (KOR) who beat Dershwitz (USA) 15-14 to take the gold medal. Kim was 8-5 down at the break. Dershwitz then went 13-8 ahead in the second before a flurry of attacks from the Korean took level at 13-13. With both fencers on yellow cards (for starting too early) the referee then awarded Kim a second yellow (for the same offence). That call went to video and controversially the referee showed red cards to both fencers taking the score to 14-14. Kim took the Championships title with a well-timed attack. The bronze medals went to Hubers (GER) and Trushakov (RUS).
GB Placings: Aiyenuro 28th, Boteler 50th, Miller 62nd.
Women’s Foil
In the Junior Women’s Foil event Leah King joined a field of 92 entries and won all but one of her six first round fights earning her 11th seed and a bye through the round of 128. In the round of 64 King beat Morillo-Roman (VEN) 15-7 before taking out world number 23, Cellerova (SVK) 15-10, in the round of 32. Following that she faced world number 2, Mancini (ITA) and the Italian came out on top 15-7 in the round of 16.
The event was won by Volpi (ITA) who effortlessly beat King’s victor, Mancini (ITA) 15-7 in the final. A hypnotic display of distance control combined with a variety of hits from Volpi saw the Championship title won in the first period of fencing. The bronze medals went the Kiefer (USA) and Monaco (ITA).
GB Placings: King 11th.
The Junior individual events in men’s foil and women’s sabre take place on day five of the Championships.
