15 coaches attended the latest Sword in Hand CPD Day, hosted by Cardiff Academy of Fencing and facilitated by Phil Shepherd-Foster.
15 coaches with a combined experience of over 300 years came together for the latest BF Sword in Hand CPD day. Facilitated by Fencing Development Team member Phil Shepherd-Foster, the day allowed for coaches to discuss areas they feel are important to them and related to their current coaching environment. The coaches then shared their experiences to support each other.
Some of the key themes that emerged and discussed included blade presentation, how to make lessons more representative, and working effectively with beginners.

Some of the feedback included:
“There was a variety of knowledge in the room and this was really helpful.”
“I wish we had more time – there was a really nice busy atmosphere, great experience.”
Phil Shepherd-Foster, who facilitated the day and discussions, said:
“It was a great deal of fun and a lot of learning for all involved!”
The Sword in Hand CPD plays a part in the BF offer for developing coaches. The structure allows for coaches to discuss their coaching, and what their challenges are in relation to their day-to-day work in the environments they operate in. This then allows other coaches to support and offer suggestions and feedback.
BF Coaching and Workforce Development Manager, Chris Turner, commented:
“Thank you to Cardiff Academy of Fencing, and in particular Phil for coordinating such a great learning experience on behalf of British Fencing. These days really help coaches share amongst each other their particular challenges, which plays such an important role in the development of a coach.”
