DIRECTOR APPOINTMENT PROCESS: UPDATE FROM THE BOARD
In response to member queries on the upcoming EGM the Board is confirming the intended process for appointing Directors.
The background to this article is the upcoming EGM which sets out changes to the articles with regards to the numbers of elected and appointed Directors.
There have been questions from the members with regards to the differences between the process that would be followed by the Board for these two types of Directors.
The intended process for appointing Directors is as follows, to be led by BFs Nomination Committee:
- Alongside the standard job description of a Board Director, the Board specifies the skills and experience that they are looking for to fill gaps in the current skills and experience of the Board. Included will be additional details of the role that the Board Director might be performing on the Board (eg Welfare Lead, Anti-Doping Lead, Safeguarding Lead, AGRC member, etc).
- This Role Description will be published out to the members and via Social Media.
- Candidates (eligible members) will be invited to submit their CVs and covering letters within a reasonable period of time.
- A panel of at least 3 people will create a short list (based on scoring against the skills and experience, with names and personal details redacted) and interviews will follow to select the best candidate. The Panel will normally be made up of at least 2 existing Board members in addition to an external funding body representative (UK Sport, Sport England).
- Appointments will be made subject to reference checks, for a maximum of four years (1st term).
- Appointments will need to be approved by a member vote at the next AGM.
As reminder, the process for Elected Directors is as follows, also led by the Nominations Committee.
- The Board specifies the preferred skills and experience to fill gaps in the current skills and experience of the Board (similar to step 1 in the appointment process set out above).
- These will be published out to the members and via Social Media.
- Candidates (eligible members) submit an Election Statement and List of Nominating Members.
- The Nomination Commitee issue an advisory note as to whether a candidate does not meet/partially meets or fully meets the skillset required.
- All candidates can stand for election, irrespective of their skills and experience.
- Once a Director has been elected they are an Elected Director for a maximum of four years (1st term).
