GBR Para Pathway

Last updated: 2nd June 2026

The GBR Wheelchair Fencing World Class Programme (WCP), funded by UK Sport, transferred from the UK Sports Institute (UKSI) to British Fencing (BF) in June 2025. Along with supporting a world leading Paralympic Programme, we develop the next generation of world class Paralympic fencers ready for 2032 and beyond.

Understanding the BF Para Pathway

The BF Para Pathway supports athletes from their first introduction to Para Fencing through to competitive success at the highest levels. It includes;

Development Camps

Open to all seated fencers and designed to introduce athletes to pathway training, fundamental skills, and early competitive behaviours.

Accelerate Camps

A progression from the Development Camps, Accelerate Camps offer more targeted support for athletes demonstrating clear potential for performance fencing. They act as a bridge between broad development activity and focused high‑performance preparation.

Accelerate Camps

BF’s Accelerate Camps are a development opportunity designed to support and progress athletes who have the potential to compete in Para Fencing at an international level.

These camps provide a performance‑focused training environment that accelerates the development of wheelchair fencers who are working towards – or demonstrating readiness for – the demands of the WCP.

Purpose of the Accelerate Camps

  • Provide an understanding of the performance standards required at international level to be a successful para-fencer.
  • Accelerate the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological development of wheelchair fencers on the GBR Pathway.
  • Prepare athletes for the training standards and competitive expectations of major championships and the Paralympic Games.
  • Build a strong pool of athletes pushing for future success at World Cups, World Championships, European Championships, and ultimately the WCP.
  • Provide a high-quality training environment that challenges and supports athletes in equal measure.

Who the Camps Are For

These camps are designed for wheelchair fencers who are:

  • Already internationally classified,
  • Currently undergoing classification, or
  • Demonstrating the potential to achieve classification.
  • Where beneficial, additional athletes and sparring partners may be invited to enhance training quality and athlete experience.

Long‑Term Aims

By investing in athletes who have the potential to progress to a WCP, the Accelerate Camps:

  • Provide an opportunity for athletes to move onto the WCP,
  • Strengthen the national pathway,
  • Raise standards across the seated fencing community, and
  • Support the long‑term success and sustainability of British wheelchair fencing.

Accelerate Camps are designed for selected athletes and provide up to ten days of contact time each year, delivered at the Bath Salle.
